Sète agglopôle méditerranée
Thau Agglo was created on the 17th December 2002 with the aim of bringing together eight communities: Mireval, Vic la Gardiole, Gigean, Balaruc le Vieux, Balaruc les Bains, Frontignan la Peyrade, Sète et Marseillan.
This collaboration is founded on a long shared history, remarkable natural spaces, marine and lagoon activities, and rich cultural and economic exchanges.
It provides various public services to its 94,800 habitants (public transport, social housing, environmental protection, waste management, sanitation and the development of cultural and leisure facilities). It aims to promote a rich economic development that creates employment while preserving the quality of life of its habitants.
In total, the consolidated budget for 2012 was 122 million Euros, supporting almost 250 agents.
In order to improve the quality of life and the desirability of its territory, Thau Agglo adheres to a policy of preserving and promoting its natural heritage. Its territory is home to a number of outstanding natural environments, including the disused saltworks at Castellas and Frontignan and the Gâchon lagoon. The old saltworks are remarkable for the rich diversity of habitats coexisting in the more or less saline conditions that are found there. Hydraulic management of the saltworks allows for responsive habitat and species conservation plans. Initial surveys and management plans have brought to light various concerns for the fauna and flora found here. Footfall management to these sites is essential for their preservation.
